John White, an Irish tenor, was born in St. John's where he attended Holy Cross and later sang in the choir of St. Patrick's Church. He first came to the attention of Newfoundland with a special program of Irish songs and stories for St. Patrick's Day, 1958. He joined the CBC to perform on a weekly show called "Saturday Night Jamboree". In 1964 he was given the star spot on CBC television's "All Around the Circle". He has also published a book of poems.
